“Resting of Light” is a seven-minute eulogy that approaches an absolute absence of emotion before drawing back toward literal grief. The composition stands as a direct monument for Hardy Fox, the late primary composer of the experimental collective The Residents.
It´s not traditional symphonic mourning; the track amasses weight through hundreds of layers of acoustic and electric guitars playing single-note lines recorded without standard cabinet microphones.
The arrangement treats the dedication as a repetitive motif to anchor a larger cycle of personal loss. Vocalists Carla Kihlstedt and Amelie Anna provide the melodic presence, leaving their lines balanced above the dense instrumental groundwork. Mixer Bryan Jerden pushes these voices forward, forcing the human element to override the mechanical loops.
This choice prevents the multi-layered arrangement from hardening into a cold technical exercise, keeping the focus on a specific, lived relationship.
Appearing Records will issue the parent album Vox Pterous on July 31, 2026, placing this composition inside a larger series of songs written for friends who died within a few years. The arrangement draws from the steady pulse of Steve Reich and the Kronos Quartet, transforming a private memorial into an open acoustic environment. The single-note guitar lines continue their repetition, running until the sound cuts.
