THROES NYC turns “Fight The Urge (Minimum Risk Remix)” toward the moment when loving someone well becomes entangled with the fear of losing them. The song comes from the impulse to sabotage something good before it can disappear on its own: if the relationship will eventually fall apart, why not start the argument now? That thought keeps circling around the harder question of whether someone who has found a good partner believes they are good enough to keep them.
The impulse is to ruin something good before having to find out whether it can last. If I’m going to fuck it up eventually, why not now? The thought keeps turning into another argument, another reason to push the relationship toward the hole being dug from inside it. Underneath it is the fear of having someone great and not believing you are good enough to keep them.
For those who might not know you yet, how would you introduce yourself?
A couple of old kids who never got over music, just trying to make it like everyone else.
If you had to bottle up your sound into just three words, which ones would you choose?
Exploratory, connective, eclectic.
Which artists (not only music-related) or moments have left the biggest mark on your music?
Absolutely Radiohead, hands down. Whatever they do is just mind blowing and gorgeous and ridiculously good. Their artwork, music..everything. Also, on a more personal side- hanging out in Michael’s room with his Tascam making up songs and listening to music growing up. Watching family members and friends jam together and always wanting to be in on it. Listening to britpop and grunge and seeing every band that came through nyc with my cousins as a teenager.
When you hit play on your songs, what kind of feeling takes over?
This sense of feeling complete even if I’m feeling incomplete in other aspects. It’s like this really lovely dark rolling happiness Cheshire Cat smile feeling.
If you could team up with anyone in the world—no limits—who would be that dream collaborator?
Are they living? Dead? Living I’d say Thom Yorke, of course. Anyone from the Radiohead universe. Dead I’d have to say Edgar Allan Poe. I’d like to write a really shitty miserable poem about something with him and then have The Beatles write the music to go with it.
What are you working on now, and what are your plans for the future? Anything exciting you can tell us about?
We are working on new music constantly. There’s always something being sent back and forth that we are both excited about or vibing on. For the future we just plan on making more music together and hoping it’s the soundtrack for a moment in someone’s life, good or bad. We definitely want one of our songs to be used for the opening credits of a TV show. But, the show would have to be as amazing as the first season of True Detective was.
Can you walk us through the story or emotion behind “Fight The Urge ”?
I don’t know…relationships is hard. There’s not really one particular story. It’s like a collection of stories about being in love and the feeling of having someone great, but not quite believing you were able to pull in someone so good. It’s basically self sabotage. If I’m going to fuck it up eventually, why not now? I’m going to keep arguing myself into a hole. That kind of thing. It really comes from this place of intense fear and anxiety at the idea of having anything good- because you’re not sure you’re good enough to keep it. But also loving the person you’re with intensely, and wanting to love them the way they should be loved forever.
