AEVA brings architectural rhythm to a 3D printed side table

Tilla Goldberg and Ippolito Fleitz Group designed the AEVA side table as a sculptural piece for Tola Dolza, using industrial 3D printing to give a familiar furniture typology an architectural presence. The AEVA side table is formed as a compact volume punctuated by internal arcades, which reduce its visual weight while creating a rhythm of openings beneath the top surface. Its proportions and geometry allow it to function as an occasional table, yet the piece also operates as a small architectural object whose structure, surface and manufacturing process remain visibly connected.

The formal language of AEVA draws on the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer, whose work often reinterpreted classical elements through fluid and forward-looking geometries. Goldberg translates this influence into the scale of furniture by using internal arches that give the table the appearance of a contemporary column capital. The upper surface remains flat and practical, providing space for books, flowers, personal objects or electronic devices, while the openings below introduce depth and movement into a form that would otherwise read as a solid mass.

The 3D printed AEVA is manufactured by additive tectonics using econitWood™, a patented composite developed from wood-processing offcuts and a bio-based binder. Regionally sourced sawdust and wood shavings are combined with magnesium and salt water before the table is printed layer by layer in an industrial additive-manufacturing facility. This production method allows Tilla Goldberg and Ippolito Fleitz Group to work with geometries that would be difficult to achieve through conventional woodworking, while the additive process avoids the offcuts normally generated through cutting and subtractive fabrication.

The surface treatment reinforces the relationship between digital production and the finished appearance of the table, as the texture created by the printing process remains deliberately visible throughout the object. Only the outer faces are sanded, producing a smoother open-pored finish, while the interior recesses retain a rougher and more porous character. Colour is sprayed across the exterior in a way that allows only irregular traces to reach deeper into the arches, accentuating the layered construction and making the difference between exterior and interior surfaces more apparent. AEVA is introduced in plaster, bronze and blackberry pearl.

The material strategy also informs the environmental approach of the project, since the production system relies on reusable organic-based components and produces no conventional cutting waste. AEVA is flame-retardant and suitable for both residential and commercial interiors, while the material can be ground down at the end of the table’s lifecycle and reused for another 3D printed object. Additive tectonics’ process also makes custom editions easier to produce, allowing variations to be developed without changing the fundamental manufacturing logic behind the design.

The name AEVA derives from the Latin word “Aevum,” referring to an era or eternity, which connects the object’s classical architectural references with its contemporary production method. Through the project, Tilla Goldberg and Ippolito Fleitz Group bring together furniture design, additive manufacturing and material research in a side table whose appearance is inseparable from the way it is made. AEVA turns architectural references into a compact domestic object while demonstrating how 3D printed furniture can combine expressive form, recycled material content and circular production principles.
