SP’s: Spirit World

SP’s: Spirit World

SP’s “Spirit World” is a breakneck punk song with a deathly invitation at its center. “I will shepherd your soul into the afterlife with me” arrives without warning, backed by a train-like snare and aggressive guitar. The song wastes no time setting up its world. It pulls you straight into it, with Albertson’s refrain sounding less like a promise of safe passage than a threat from someone who has already decided your fate.

The verses offer a quieter voice, but the words bring little comfort. A new home waits among the ghosts, beneath the yew tree, where bones can be liberated and the dead can dance. The speaker insists that no harm will come, then asks for company across the astral sea. There is something playful in the language, but the repeated invitation leaves no room to refuse. LaBate’s guitar keeps the punk attack from becoming routine, adding a rough texture to the rush before the song slips into its dreamy ’50s breakdown.

The hand-drawn video pushes this strange procession further, sending its protagonist through haunted houses, evil trains, monstrous doctors and a desert full of hungry scavengers. Its grotesque images match the song’s speed and dark humor. The refrain keeps returning, with the same promise of passage to the other side. By the end, the spirit world has become a place you may already be entering, whether you agreed to go or not.
