Lauren Minear’s “Autumn Leaves” looks at the life a woman might have had and the family she chose instead. She wonders if she waited too long to pursue music, watching autumn leaves fall as another season passes. The question comes back throughout the song: “Is it too late for me?” She got what she wanted, but that doesn’t stop her from thinking about what she gave up to get there.
The memory of another life grows greener with time. She imagines winter nights alone, spring on the road and summer spent dreaming, then fast-forwards to the moment she can return to her child. She doesn’t dismiss ambition or pretend that regret disappears once she counts her blessings. She can love her family and still wonder what might have happened if she had followed a different path.
That question changes when she imagines a life without the person she has now. “And what would I do if I didn’t have you?” brings her back to the present, though it doesn’t erase the uncertainty that came before. The leaves keep falling, and the years keep moving. She may never know what the other life would have held, but she knows who would be missing from it.
