Arc’teryx updates its iconic Sidewinder ski jacket with new GORE-TEX construction

Arc’teryx has reintroduced the Sidewinder Jacket, a technical freeride ski jacket originally developed 25 years ago. The Canadian outdoor brand marks the anniversary with an updated version of its distinctive asymmetrical design, combining contemporary GORE-TEX construction with the curved front zipper that established the original model’s identity. Designed for skiing and snowboarding, the new Sidewinder retains its recognisable silhouette while incorporating revised proportions, technical fabrics and functional details for mountain use.

The jacket’s most identifiable feature is its curved Sidewinder Zipper, which moves away from the conventional straight fastening found on most technical outerwear. Its thermomoulded construction follows the collar around the chin, reducing contact and friction while preventing the zipper from bunching up. This asymmetrical arrangement extends to the placement of the pockets, giving the jacket a distinctive appearance without compromising accessibility or storage.

For the anniversary edition, Arc’teryx has introduced a hybrid GORE-TEX ePE construction engineered to provide waterproof, windproof and breathable protection. Three-layer GORE-TEX ePE is used across the body and hood, while the yoke and sleeves incorporate a more abrasion-resistant 100-denier ripstop face fabric. The outer textile uses recycled nylon, and the specified fabrics are manufactured without intentionally added PFAS. These updates bring the Sidewinder’s construction into line with the brand’s current technical outerwear developments.

The redesigned jacket also introduces a relaxed fit, providing additional space for layering and freedom of movement during freeride activities. Its helmet-compatible StormHood includes a brim for improved visibility in challenging weather, while adjustable cuffs and a drawcord hem help limit exposure to wind and snow. Underarm ventilation zippers allow excess heat to escape during demanding activity. The jacket weighs approximately 681 grams and measures 76 centimetres along the centre back in size medium.

Storage is distributed across several compartments, including two hand pockets with protective flaps, a chest pocket, a sleeve pass pocket and internal mesh pockets. A RECCO reflector is integrated into the design to assist search and rescue operations in emergencies. These functional elements accompany the updated offset pocket configuration, maintaining the original Sidewinder’s unconventional visual language while addressing the practical requirements of modern ski apparel.

Twenty-five years after its original introduction, the Sidewinder Jacket remains recognisable for its unconventional zipper construction and technical approach to freeride apparel. The latest edition preserves these defining characteristics while introducing updated fabrics, revised proportions and improved functionality. The reissue reflects Arc’teryx’s continued development of technical outerwear, bringing an established design into its contemporary ski collection.
