Sal Valentinetti’s “One Wish” is a love song built around something its singer cannot give his wife: the chance to have her father back. Inspired by Gianna’s loss, it approaches grief through the limits of what one person can do for another. He can be there for her, but he cannot undo what happened.
That simple idea gives the song its weight. The wish is not about changing his own life or asking for something he wants. He wants to take away someone else’s pain, even if only for a moment. Love can bring two people closer, but it cannot make every loss easier to bear. He writes from that helpless place, where wanting to help and being able to help are two different things.
Co-written with producer Lee Falco, “One Wish” is the second single from String Theory, Valentinetti’s first album of original music. Its vintage soul setting suits a song that asks for no grand solution. The wish itself is small enough to say in a few words, but there is no way to make it come true.
