fika, how YuJoung Kim reimagines the dashboard of autonomous vehicles
YuJoung Kim, an industrial designer based in Seoul, has introduced a groundbreaking concept with her BA design project from Hongik University, titled “fika.” This innovative creation reimagines the dashboard of autonomous vehicles, transforming it into a robotic barista assistant designed to enhance the driving experience through a unique blend of technology and comfort.
As autonomous self-driving vehicle (SDV) and electric vehicle (EV) technologies advance, traditional vehicle components, such as engine spaces, are being redefined. Fika leverages this evolution by proposing a redesigned dashboard that balances technological innovation with human-centric design.
At its core, fika features a flexible robotic arm capable of delivering coffee tailored to passengers’ emotions and physical conditions. This addition provides a soothing and personalized experience, allowing passengers to enjoy moments of comfort and relaxation during their journey. The robotic assistant integrates seamlessly into the vehicle’s interior, using advanced technology to interact intuitively with passengers.
It begins by recommending coffee capsules based on an analysis of the passenger’s mood, weather conditions, or preferences before the ride. The system enhances this experience by incorporating smart fabric with integrated fiber-optic LEDs, which change color to create an ambiance tailored to the selected coffee capsule and overall conditions. This thoughtful attention to detail elevates the vehicle interior, making each trip feel both futuristic and inviting.
Fika also features a sophisticated main user interface located on the steering wheel, which transitions smoothly to a sub-screen on the right-hand side when the vehicle is in driving mode. This ensures intuitive and uninterrupted control, maintaining a seamless user experience.
The robotic arm, a highlight of fika’s design, adapts dynamically to vehicle vibrations, ensuring the safe delivery of beverages and other items. Its hybrid structure, combining multi-axis soft joints and single-axis hard joints, strikes a balance between flexibility and stability. Covered in a flexible fabric, the arm blends naturally into the vehicle’s aesthetic, offering both functionality and style.
Fika represents a forward-thinking solution that brings the comforts of a café into the convenience of autonomous mobility. By harmonizing technology, people, and vehicles, it provides a new way to enjoy coffee on the go—anytime, anywhere. This project underscores the potential for design to transform everyday experiences, marking a step toward a more integrated and personalized future in transportation.
