Federico Pompignoli designs LS24 Lounge System for Fondazione Prada rooftop

LS24 Lounge System introduces advanced outdoor furniture design in Milan

The LS24 Lounge System, a custom-designed outdoor seating solution, represents a significant advancement in the application of technology within contemporary furniture design.

Conceived by architect Federico Pompignoli, founder of PMP Architecture, the system was specially created for the rooftop terrace of the Fondazione Prada Tower in Milan.

This project, realized with the production and engineering capabilities of Maila’s, demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to both materials and design intent.

Positioned atop the Torre building, an architectural addition by Rem Koolhaas, Chris van Duijn, and Pompignoli himself, the terrace offers panoramic views of Milan and a flexible venue for Fondazione Prada’s cultural programming.

The LS24 Lounge System complements this environment by providing modular seating that adapts to a range of spatial layouts, capable of serving both formal and informal settings.

Pompignoli’s vision was to create a seating system that functions not only as individual components but also as a cohesive spatial instrument when multiplied.

Constructed from carbon fiber and finished with a chrome effect, the LS24 modules are engineered for lightweight durability and aesthetic precision. Each unit features a core made from recycled PET, clad in multiaxial carbon fiber layers.

This combination ensures the furniture maintains its structural integrity while remaining mobile enough to be repositioned for different events.

The chrome finish, achieved through sequential post-processing techniques, contributes to the reflective quality of the terrace, augmenting its visual depth and interaction with natural light.

A defining feature of the LS24 system is its dual-function seating configuration. The outer edge operates as a stool-like seat suitable for temporary use, while the inner surface offers a deeper, more comfortable lounge area.

This duality is formed through the intersection of curved surfaces and elevated platforms, producing a form that is both functional and visually engaging.

The system’s adaptability speaks to broader architectural challenges, how to create forms that are both beautiful and responsive to changing uses.

The seating is enhanced by pigmented silicone cushions that are translucent, allowing integrated LED lighting to subtly illuminate each piece from within.

This lighting not only supports the functionality of the furniture at night but also reinforces the modern aesthetic of the rooftop setting.

The combination of technical innovation, sustainable material choices, and architectural discipline ensures that the LS24 Lounge System becomes an architectural tool that reshapes how outdoor spaces are experienced.
