COP28 Opening Sequence by Aggressive and LOOP
Multidisciplinary collectives Aggressive and LOOP have unveiled a visually compelling manifesto recognizing the pivotal role of local leaders in combating climate change. This ambitious project was created to launch the COP28 Local Climate Action Summit, hosted in Dubai at the end of last year.
Commissioned by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the film is a large-scale immersive piece designed to underscore the importance of local leadership in reducing emissions, addressing climate risks, and accelerating national climate initiatives. Given an open brief that provided only essential details for the voiceover and key features, Aggressive and LOOP were granted significant creative freedom to explore and define the film’s aesthetic direction.
Drawing from their extensive portfolio of eco-themed projects, the creative teams leveraged natural materials, textures, forms, and lighting to craft a compelling narrative. Architecture forms the thematic backbone of the film, weaving together a series of diverse CGI visuals interspersed with statements from prominent city mayors worldwide. The film ingeniously depicts pollution being extracted from the air, garbage bags shrinking for efficient storage, and buildings flourishing while conserving abstract blocks of water.
The complexity of the visuals indicates the technical prowess required to bring the film to life. One of the key challenges faced by the team was the creation of procedurally generated structures from cube-shaped segments, which allowed for swift edits during the initial visual research and development phase. LOOP utilized tyFlow, a powerful and versatile particle simulation tool, to construct these intricate structures, with each cube on screen representing a particle.
Max Chelyadnikov, Executive Producer and Creative Director at LOOP, reflects on the unique synergy between Aggressive and LOOP: “I personally believe that our collaboration with Aggressive is a very rare case for any business, let alone the volatile CG- and design-related industry. We’re always on the same page, working as one and always delivering. This efficiency is a testament to years of experience working together, and I hope we’ll see more projects like this in the near future to bring more of our ideas to life.”
