Akashi Residence by Alexis Dornier a playful journey through light movement and tropical living in Bali

Akashi Residence, located in the picturesque village of Pererenan, Bali, is a striking example of modern residential architecture infused with imagination and vitality. Designed by Alexis Dornier, this six-bedroom home showcases a harmonious balance between contemporary design principles and an unrestrained sense of play. The defining element of the residence is a bold central void that slices through the structure, flooding the space with natural light and promoting airflow while anchoring the visual and experiential identity of the home.

At the heart of this void lies a sculptural slide, a surprising and whimsical addition that redefines traditional domestic space. More than a playful accessory, the slide invites interaction and ignites curiosity, embodying the residence’s philosophy of joyful living. Its elegant curves cut through the vertical volume with a dynamic grace, becoming a central artery that connects upper and lower levels while reinforcing a sense of movement throughout the house.

The architectural language continues through the uniquely designed handrail system that spirals along the edges of the void like a conveyor belt, adding fluidity and rhythm to the interior. This design approach transforms circulation into an experience of motion and openness, as if the house itself breathes and moves with its occupants. Light and shadows shift across surfaces in a constant ballet, amplifying the sensory engagement with the space and heightening the sense of being enveloped by movement.

Downstairs, the transition to tranquility is achieved through an open connection to a serene swimming pool area. This space offers a visual and experiential contrast to the kinetic energy of the core void, creating a dialogue between activity and rest. Through the deliberate interplay of these elements, the home achieves a rare spatial equilibrium—both stimulating and soothing.

Embracing Bali’s tropical climate, Akashi Residence seamlessly merges indoor and outdoor living. Large open spaces, lush vegetation, and the use of natural materials such as wood and stone reinforce the home’s bond with its surroundings. Every aspect of the design fosters a connection to nature while maintaining a sense of architectural refinement.

Akashi Residence stands as a celebration of architectural storytelling—where joy, movement, and nature converge to create a living experience that is as emotionally resonant as it is visually compelling. It is a home that elevates everyday living into an art form, inviting exploration, conversation, and wonder.
