Timeless craftsmanship and sustainable design by Akiko Ken Made
Akiko Kuwahata and Ken Winther, working under the name Akiko Ken Made, are an exceptional team of cabinetmakers, each bringing unique skills and perspectives to their craft. Both work collaboratively and independently on projects that reflect their deep respect for the material and their dedication to fine craftsmanship.
Akiko, originally from Japan, has a strong academic and professional foundation in design and woodworking. After earning degrees in Living Space Design from Nihon University, she honed her skills as a cabinetmaker in Japan before furthering her education at the Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark. Her approach focuses on exploring the inherent qualities of natural wood, blending functionality with fluid, understated design.
Akiko’s work often incorporates subtle, ingenious details, such as the practical application of magnetic paint or the use of finely cut wooden strips for sewing. Her dedication to quality ensures that her creations are not only visually appealing but also tactilely irresistible, characterized by an unparalleled level of finish.
Ken’s passion for woodworking is deeply rooted in his upbringing, as his parents were involved in furniture manufacturing. His craftsmanship evolved through his time at PP Møbler, a renowned workshop producing high-quality furniture, including many iconic Hans J. Wegner designs.
Additionally, Ken underwent extensive training with Japanese carpenter masters, further refining his meticulous and innovative approach. He enjoys pushing the boundaries of what wood can achieve, crafting delicate pieces such as semi-transparent lathe-turned lampshades and pressed veneer baskets sewn with cane cord.
Together, Akiko and Ken live and work in their villa north of Copenhagen, complete with a built-in workshop. Their designs organically reflect the fusion of Japanese and Danish influences, a balance they describe as intrinsic rather than deliberate. Their creative process begins with sketches and mock-ups, gradually refined through touch and intuition until harmony is achieved. Sustainability is a core principle of their work; they select wood suppliers with care and prioritize creating durable, timeless pieces that minimize environmental impact.
Even after three decades of experience, the duo continues to learn and evolve. Each new project presents unique challenges that lead to fresh insights and techniques. Their commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation ensures that their work not only honors tradition but also continually redefines the possibilities of wood as a material.
