Lisa Marks algorithmic lace has won the 2019 Lexus Design Award’s top honor. Using a 16th century weaving technique and new technologically efficient textile building algorithms, Marks has weaved tradition and advanced modeling to create speciality bras for women who have had mastectomies from breast cancer.

Seeing a gap in the types of solutions that were available for cancer survivors, Marks took her knowledge of mathematical modeling and 3d body scans to create handmade lace bras that contour bodily curvatures while also creating symmetry and projection to normalize differences on the chest wall. These bras mold to the body without painful wires found in traditional undergarments.

Her innovation is individual centered, and because it incorporates new and proven techniques, but is also visually enchanting, it has won the highest award. The Lexus design awards are an international design competition that searches out and honours innovative creators who seek to contribute to society in a beneficial way.
