The Aluminum Mountain a fusion of tradition nature and modernity
Wutopia Lab has unveiled an innovative project called the Aluminum Mountain, located in the Mt. Luofu area of Canton. This remarkable structure functions as the Traditional Chinese Medicine Health Industrial Park Exhibition Center, a collaboration between Ping An Real Estate and the Guangzhou Fangyuan Group. Inspired by the surrounding natural and cultural elements, the project merges traditional Taoist philosophy with modern architectural innovation to create a space that transcends materiality and embodies a poetic connection to its environment.
The inspiration for the Aluminum Mountain began with a moment of awe during a visit to Mt. Luofu. A sudden downpour obscured the landscape, but as the rain cleared, the mountain emerged from the mist, evoking the ethereal imagery of a Chinese celestial palace. This revelation sparked the concept of reinterpreting “one sea and three mountains,” a classical theme in Chinese garden design. By remodeling the fish pond and incorporating two additional peaks, the Aluminum Mountain was conceived as a contemporary version of this ancient ideal, blending nature and human creativity.
The design of the Aluminum Mountain emphasizes abstraction and ambiguity, aligning with Taoist principles. Circles and cones were used as foundational geometries, creating three interconnected, hollow “mountains” crafted from perforated aluminum panels. These panels, with varying degrees of density, allow the structure to shift visually throughout the day. Under sunlight, the mountain appears solid and imposing, while at night, illuminated from within, it transforms into a glowing, ethereal silhouette. This interplay of light and shadow ensures the mountain remains dynamic, echoing the transient beauty of its natural surroundings.
The Aluminum Mountain is not merely a structure but an immersive journey. Visitors are guided along a water path to the base of the mountain, where they can ascend via a spiral staircase or elevator into its layered interior. The underground spaces form a maze of interconnected circles, housing exhibition areas, conference rooms, and art galleries. The design slows time, creating a contemplative atmosphere that mirrors the rhythms of nature. Central to the experience is a triple-height exhibition space, the tallest of the three peaks, which serves as the heart of this symbolic landscape.
The Aluminum Mountain culminates in a celestial experience, inviting visitors to ascend to its peak through artificial fog and gentle breezes. As they reach the summit, they are encouraged to reflect on the harmonious balance between modernity and tradition. More than just a sales center, the Aluminum Mountain aspires to inspire a lost way of living, offering a dreamlike retreat that reconnects urban dwellers with the beauty of nature and the wisdom of the past. It stands as a modern celestial palace, a testament to the enduring power of architecture to evoke wonder and meaning.
