Andrew Long

Andrew Long builds “Recode / Perpetual” around two sides of his club-focused sound, with “Recode” holding a steady pulse and “Perpetual” leaving more room for movement around the beat. Both tracks use four-to-the-floor foundations, but their details give them different shapes.

PERPETUAL

“Recode” opens with a four-to-the-floor kick that never wavers, with crisp syncopated hi-hats and small percussion shuffles moving around it. A warm sub-bass follows the kick, locking the low end into a tight step while leaving space above it. The groove keeps pushing forward without filling every gap.

The synths give the track its character. A bright arpeggiated lead arrives early, with a gentle resonance adding a slightly metallic edge. Pads swell and recede underneath, while mid-range plucks appear later and echo the placement of the percussion. The melodic and rhythmic parts keep answering each other.

“Recode” keeps that space even as the arrangement fills out. The kick and sub-bass stay fixed while the arpeggio, pads and plucks move around them. The groove does the work, with each new layer adding another part to the same pulse.

RECODE

“Perpetual” takes a more restless approach to its four-to-the-floor foundation. Tight sixteenth-note hi-hat shuffles move around the kick, with occasional open-hat accents pushing the groove forward. A muted clap lands on the second and fourth beats, while low percussion, a faint rimshot and a soft tom appear at irregular points.

The smaller sounds keep the rhythm from becoming too fixed. The kick holds the pulse, but the hats and percussion keep changing what happens around it. Nothing crowds the center, leaving the groove grounded while giving it room to move.

“Perpetual” stays with that balance between a steady beat and small interruptions. The kick keeps its place, the hats keep shifting, and the extra percussion breaks the pattern just enough. The track invites movement without demanding it.
