Anna Zimmermann is celebrating imperfection
Anna Zimmermann‘s “Vessels of Imperfection” challenges conventional notions of flawlessness in design, celebrating the beauty found within imperfections. This collection of aluminium cast vessels is not just about creating objects; it’s a journey that intertwines traditional craftsmanship with an experimental, process-driven approach. Through collaboration with a craftsman in Vienna, Zimmermann delves into the art of metal casting, resulting in a series that captivates with its raw authenticity.
The essence of “Vessels of Imperfection” lies in its embrace of the irregularities inherent in the metal casting process. Rather than concealing seams and flaws, Anna Zimmermann highlights them, transforming what would typically be perceived as defects into distinctive features. This deliberate decision reflects Zimmermann’s philosophy, where imperfection is not merely accepted but celebrated as a vital component of the creative process.
Collaboration plays a pivotal role in the realization of Anna Zimmermann’s vision. Partnering with a craftsman in Vienna, she embarked on a nine-month exploration of metal casting techniques. This partnership not only facilitated the exchange of knowledge but also fostered a mutual understanding and appreciation for the craft. The result is a collection that seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design sensibilities.
The method of “Vessels of Imperfection” is of sand casting, a technique deeply rooted in tradition yet open to innovation. Each piece in the collection is meticulously crafted using this method, where a casting model is molded in sand, creating a void that is filled with molten metal. The distinctive seam that emerges at the interface of the two mold halves is typically smoothed away in traditional casting practices. However, Anna Zimmermann chooses to retain and accentuate these seams, transforming them into integral elements of the design.
