Antje Duvekot: NO

Antje Duvekot: NO

Antje Duvekot’s “NO” questions the promise that a way out is waiting somewhere ahead. The light at the end of the tunnel turns is a mirror. It reflects the searchers back at themselves. The ground is quicksand, yet they keep collecting things they cannot hold. It jumps from a dead Molly and migrating birds to a joker, a thief, a paper in the pocket, and a coupon for a cup of peace. The speaker searches for a feeling of being alive, then describes pain moving from the heart to the throat and belly. Art, jail, bail, and the Holy Grail crowd the same passage. The search for meaning has become another source of exhaustion.

Duvekot’s accompanying statement frames “No” as a refusal to shrink or keep everyone comfortable, a turn toward anger, humor, and irreverence. The lyrics offer no neat escape from their own questions. The mirror stays at the end of the tunnel, and the search goes on.
