Awake & Dreaming’s “Underwater” makes letting go a matter of survival, with a whale drifting too far beneath the surface as its central image. At 2 a.m., the speaker is alone with the choice to “let it go” or “let it swallow you whole,” caught between breaking and learning to bend. The hour matters because there is nobody left to call, only a conversation with the self.
The whale gives that private struggle a physical scale. It is massive and alone, “searching, calling out in code,” sending signals that nobody seems able to understand. The lyrics answer that isolation with a smaller instruction: “Just be in your bones. / Call them home.” Taking up space becomes part of the same act of staying present, bringing the self back from somewhere too deep.
“Underwater” keeps returning to the choice without pretending it has already been solved. The tears are gone from the speaker’s shadow, but the whale is still searching. Let go, or be swallowed. The call goes out again.
