AYZAN: Therapy Song

AYZAN: Therapy Song

AYZAN’s “Therapy Song” turns a session of self-examination into a fragmented pop song. The words move from fear and gravity to images of kings, shadows, and a night breaking open. The references to BoJack Horseman and Oedipus give the song an intellectual frame, but the lyrics offer no story to follow.

The line “The only way out is through” gives the song a point of focus. Around it, phrases break off before they can finish, and questions about what someone sees sit beside the desire to share a life with another person. The vocals and synths sit within a structure that avoids a straight path from beginning to end. The repeated commands to breathe in and out bring the song back to the body. After all the broken phrases and abstract images, breathing becomes a simple thing to hold on to.
