Boris de Beijer’s Multidisciplinary Journey
Boris de Beijer embarked on his creative journey as a jewelry designer, graduating from the esteemed Rietveld Academie in 2011. However, rather than confining himself within the constraints of a single discipline, he has since embraced a multidisciplinary approach, navigating freely between realms of art and design.
Central to Boris’s approach is a profound reverence for craftsmanship and antique techniques, which he ingeniously reinterprets in unconventional ways, often pushing boundaries and challenging traditional norms. His work blurs the lines between form and function, inviting viewers to question hierarchical structures within contemporary art and design discourse.
Since his graduation, Boris de Beijer has predominantly explored the realm of synthetic and non-traditional materials, cultivating a distinctive visual language akin to the enigmatic processes of ancient alchemy. Through his transformative alchemy, he transmutes commonplace resources into materials reminiscent of precious substances such as glass, minerals, and metals, imbuing his creations with an ethereal and otherworldly aura.
In a pivotal moment in 2020, Boris embarked on a new chapter in his artistic exploration, delving into the realm of traditional materials. Collaborating closely with expert glassblowers from Amsterdam, he embarked on an expansive series of glassware, signaling a convergence of innovation and tradition in his practice.
For Boris de Beijer, the shift towards traditional materials signifies a quest for authenticity and tangible connection. He acknowledges the allure of synthetic materials yet recognizes the intrinsic value of craftsmanship and functionality. By infusing his glassware with both aesthetic appeal and utilitarian purpose, Boris endeavors to evoke a deeper sense of resonance and appreciation.
Boris’s artistic prowess has garnered acclaim both nationally and internationally, with exhibitions in prestigious galleries and cultural institutions worldwide. His works adorn esteemed collections including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, The Coda Museum, and the MAD Museum in New York. Represented by Side-gallery & La Romain Editions, Boris’s clientele includes renowned brands such as Jacquemus, Róhe Frames, Semaine, Cibone, and Ace&Tate.
