Renowned digital artist Cao Yuxi will speak at Motion Plus Design 2025 in New York
Cao Yuxi, also known as James Cao, stands at the forefront of global new media art, seamlessly integrating technology, culture, and creativity into a multifaceted artistic practice.
Born in China in 1990, Cao Yuxi received his formative education at two of the most prestigious art institutions in the world: the Central Academy of Fine Arts in China and the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he earned his MFA in Computer Art.
This dual foundation has enabled him to merge traditional visual aesthetics with cutting-edge digital technologies, producing a dynamic body of work that spans installations, live performances, public art, and AI-generated media.
Cao Yuxi’s work is deeply rooted in sound visualization and creative coding, areas in which he has consistently demonstrated innovation and conceptual depth. His new media art installations are immersive environments that often integrate generative visuals and interactive technologies.
These projects reflect his ongoing exploration of how data, sound, and artificial intelligence can be repurposed as artistic mediums. By transforming intangible inputs like sound and raw code into tangible visual experiences, Cao invites audiences to engage with contemporary issues through a uniquely digital lens.
The global reach of Cao’s art is evident in his participation in major contemporary art museums and new media festivals around the world. His works have been exhibited at renowned institutions such as MOMA PS1 in New York, the Today Art Museum in Beijing, and the OCT Contemporary Art Terminal (OCAT) in Shenzhen.
Each exhibition underscores his ability to transcend geographic and cultural boundaries, crafting visual narratives that resonate with a digitally connected audience.
A defining moment in Cao Yuxi’s career came in 2022, when he served as the visual effects director for the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics. This monumental project demonstrated his capacity to fuse national heritage with avant-garde digital artistry on a global stage.
The visual presentation captivated millions, showcasing the potential of new media art to enhance public spectacles and foster cultural dialogue. Beyond exhibitions and performances, Cao has made significant contributions to public art.
His permanent installations at Beijing Daxing International Airport and Shenzhen Citizen’s Plaza exemplify how digital art can be embedded into everyday environments. These installations not only beautify urban spaces but also engage the public in interactive and contemplative ways, reflecting Cao’s belief that art should be accessible and experiential.
Cao Yuxi will be one of the speakers at Motion Plus Design, a premier event dedicated to motion design and digital creativity. Scheduled for Saturday, June 14, at the Roulette Theatre in New York, the event will convene some of the most influential figures in contemporary motion design.
