Casa da Levada single family home merges architecture and nature in Penafiel
Casa da Levada, a single-family residence designed by Tsou Arquitectos, is a remarkable architectural project located in the rural village of Penafiel, Portugal, with the scenic river Tâmega as a natural backdrop. The house is a seamless extension of the surrounding landscape, where the contours of the terrain shape its form, establishing a natural dialogue between the built environment and nature.
The project reflects an organic architectural philosophy in which the house appears to emerge from the land itself, echoing the textures and materials of its context. This deep integration results in a structure that respects the topography while enhancing the aesthetic and ecological value of the site.
Accessed by a subtle paved path that cuts through the lush terrain, the layout of the Casa da Levada responds to both functional and emotional needs. A tectonic divide separates social and private spaces, converging at a central courtyard that acts as the heart of the home.
This courtyard is embraced by the volumes of the house, offering a protected open-air space that encourages interaction and introspection. Overhanging rooflines not only define outdoor rooms but also frame views of the landscape, reinforcing the connection between interior life and the external environment.
Comfort and sustainability are integral to the Casa da Levada’s design. The interior climate is regulated by a radiant floor system powered by a heat pump, complemented by ceramic floors that enhance the thermal response.
A Controlled Mechanical Ventilation (CMV) system with heat recovery maintains air quality without sacrificing thermal efficiency. Careful placement of glazing, paired with solar shading and blinds, optimizes passive solar gain during winter and provides necessary protection from excessive summer heat, contributing to year-round comfort.
Environmental responsibility is evident in every detail of the Casa da Levada. The use of cork panels for façade cladding provides natural insulation and reinforces the building’s ecological character. A green roof extends the landscape over the structure, reducing visual impact and improving thermal performance.
The stone patio, constructed from repurposed granite from nearby ruins, reflects a thoughtful approach to resource reuse and a commitment to local heritage. These elements underscore the architects’ dedication to sustainable practices that harmonize with the land rather than impose upon it.
