CHAGYEONG partition by SeongJin Hwang, Soyeon Kim, and Minje Park is a metal craft–based interior design object developed as a spatial installation for contemporary residential environments. The CHAGYEONG partition operates as a movable architectural element that reinterprets traditional Korean spatial principles within modern interiors, introducing controlled light, reflection, and privacy into compact urban living spaces.

The project takes its name from the architectural concept of “chagyeong,” or borrowed scenery, historically used to frame external landscapes as part of interior experience. In this contemporary adaptation, the CHAGYEONG partition functions as a semi-permeable screen positioned near windows or transitional zones. It allows daylight to pass through while obscuring direct sightlines from outside, creating a layered visual boundary that maintains privacy without fully closing off the space. The vertically open field of view directs attention upward, enabling occupants to perceive shifts in the sky throughout the day.

Constructed from CR Steel 3t and finished with powder coating, the CHAGYEONG partition combines structural precision with a refined surface quality. Its mirror-like metal panels are engineered with a rotating mechanism, allowing users to manually adjust angles in response to light conditions and external visibility. This kinetic feature transforms the partition into an interactive installation, where reflections of the sky, surrounding architecture, and interior elements continuously shift. The reflective surface captures variations in color and brightness, effectively translating environmental changes into a dynamic interior composition.

The structural system is designed with a load-distribution base that eliminates the need for wall fixation, allowing flexible placement across different spatial configurations. With dimensions of 580 x 400 x 1700 mm, the CHAGYEONG partition can function as a freestanding element adaptable to various residential layouts. Its modular positioning supports use cases ranging from window screening to subtle spatial division, aligning with contemporary demands for adaptable interior architecture. The object’s balance between durability and visual lightness reflects its dual role as both functional furniture and sculptural installation.

Developed between March and June 2025, the CHAGYEONG partition reflects a collaborative approach between designers SeongJin Hwang, Soyeon Kim, and Minje Park, whose practices intersect across product design, metal craft, and spatial research. Positioned at the intersection of furniture collection and architectural installation, the project addresses the loss of temporal awareness in urban living by reintroducing natural light cycles into daily routines. Through its reflective system and adjustable structure, the CHAGYEONG partition establishes a responsive interface between interior space and the external environment, redefining how residential interiors engage with natural phenomena.
