Chisato Matsumoto’s First Solo Exhibition in China Explores the Universe Through Textile Art

Chisato Matsumoto’s The Universe Twinkling in White marks a significant milestone as her first solo exhibition in China, hosted by Pearl Lam Galleries in Shanghai from February 21 to March 22, 2025. Curated by Miwa Kutsuna, the exhibition introduces Matsumoto’s distinctive approach to textile art, deeply rooted in the Japanese shibori technique, a traditional method of tie-dyeing. Her work transcends conventional craft, transforming fabric into sculptural, kinetic, and illuminated installations that immerse audiences in a spatial experience that echoes the interconnectedness of human existence and the cosmos.

At the heart of Matsumoto’s artistic philosophy lies the interplay between micro and macro perspectives. Each shibori knot is conceived as an individual unit within a larger system, mirroring the structures found in societies and celestial formations. Through this intricate technique, she explores the dynamic tension between individuality and collectivity, crafting works that reflect the movement and energy of both people and the universe. Her art embodies an ongoing transformation, where white fabric pulsates with life, evolving into expansive forms that resonate with cosmic rhythms.

A central piece in the exhibition, Beyond the Stars (2021–2025), features undulating fabric structures that assemble into a vast constellation, enveloping visitors in a universe where they experience both solitude and unity. In contrast, Hustle and Bustle (2025) draws inspiration from Shanghai’s intricate river networks, incorporating flowing blue light to symbolize the city’s continuous pulse of energy. Meanwhile, Big Bang (2025) explores the theme of universal expansion, depicting the formation of galaxies as a metaphor for human societies that constantly assemble, disperse, and reform.

Matsumoto’s innovative use of textiles reimagines the medium as a conduit for profound artistic expression. By integrating shibori techniques with modern spatial compositions, she creates immersive installations that transcend materiality, offering a contemporary re-interpretation of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Her engagement with textiles extends beyond Japan, as her recent work incorporates elements from Asian dyeing and weaving traditions, blending historical influences with contemporary artistic sensibilities.
