CR House offers panoramic views and minimalist spatial design

CR House embodies a profound architectural dialogue with its extraordinary coastal environment

The CR House, designed collaboratively by Lote Studio and Ignacio Ferreira, stands prominently along the coastal fringe of Punta Hueso in Chile’s scenic Coquimbo region. This area, part of Chile’s “Norte Chico,” is renowned for its rugged shorelines, rocky outcroppings, and resilient native vegetation adapted to semi-arid conditions.

Respecting this unique environment, the architects strategically elevated the home. This decision preserves the delicate indigenous flora while maximizing expansive panoramic views of the surrounding coastal landscape.

At the heart of the CR House’s architectural concept is a distinct grid composed of nine quadrants. Eight outer quadrants are crafted from timber, providing warmth and organic charm, while the central quadrant is constructed of robust concrete, serving as the pivotal entry point.

The central concrete core is accentuated by a sculptural, helical staircase—an architectural feature in its own right. This staircase provides visitors with a memorable entrance experience, anchoring the overall composition through elegant form and function.

CR House’s primary structure is characterized by laminated glulam timber beams radiating outward from the reinforced concrete core. Smaller secondary beams intersect these main supports, with slender purlins completing the elevated framework, contributing to visual harmony and structural clarity.

Upon ascending the staircase, visitors enter a modest yet welcoming entry hall, reflecting the home’s minimalist design ethos. Adjacent communal spaces—including the living room, dining area, and kitchen—occupy three quadrants, seamlessly integrating indoor comfort with striking coastal vistas.

Opposite these communal areas, the private spaces of the house feature a serene bedroom accompanied by an en-suite bathroom. Occupying two quadrants, these intimate areas offer privacy while maintaining visual and emotional connections with the surrounding natural environment.

An extended balcony space wraps around portions of the home, providing outdoor living spaces that encourage residents to engage fully with the spectacular ocean views. Specifically, three quadrants are dedicated to balcony spaces, perfectly positioned to enjoy breathtaking sunsets over the Pacific Ocean.

Through thoughtful elevation, meticulous structural detailing, and minimalist design, CR House embodies a profound architectural dialogue with its extraordinary coastal environment. This successful collaboration between Lote Studio and Ignacio Ferreira results in a home that gracefully integrates simplicity, functionality, and respect for its Chilean coastal context.
