Concrete TV stand by architect David Bard merges brutalist and minimalist design
The Concrete TV Stand by Swiss architect David Bard is a distinctive piece of functional art that challenges conventional design norms while embodying a brutalist aesthetic refined through contemporary sensibilities. Bard co-founded BARD YERSIN architects in 2019 together with his partner Thibault Yersin, after earning his Master of Arts in Architecture from Fribourg. His work reflects a deep interest in the fundamental elements of architecture. Through this lens, he explores how materials and forms shape our experience of space and objects.
This TV stand transcends its utilitarian role through a sculptural composition that unites industrial and natural materials with striking elegance. The base, forged from textured concrete reminiscent of meteorite rock, features embedded expanded clay beads that have been polished to reveal their subtle gleam.
This raw structural mass supports a sleek metal frame, which in turn holds the television—an arrangement that juxtaposes weight and levity, opacity and reflection, permanence and transience. The asymmetry of the form is deliberate, adding visual tension and intrigue, while still achieving a refined equilibrium.
By combining bold materiality with minimalist design, the piece stands as a visual and conceptual anchor in any interior setting. Its clean geometry and contrasting surfaces invite contemplation, reinforcing the idea that even everyday objects can hold sculptural and philosophical value. David Bard’s design speaks to a deeper architectural narrative: one where the brutal and the beautiful coexist, and where simplicity amplifies rather than diminishes impact.
