PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
Hi, I am Borja Alegre and I’m from Tarragona, Spain. I am 33 years old and I am a father. I live in Barcelona and I work as a 3D Designer.
HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
I’d say that my style is about the human being. My style is simple, is direct, funny, surreal, and metaphoric.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO ART?
I remember drawing when I was just a kid, I spent a lot of time drawing things during classes or at home, I remember getting home after the party and drawing until 6 am, it was crazy. I was a bit bad at school and my parents suggested me go to an Art School. That literally saved me, it was the perfect place for me, it was like a dream. I had to study a lot to get into school but totally worth it. Then I studied Arts at the university and there was where I learned a lot about art, about representation, composition and so many things related to art. I used to paint with oil. Painting is so beautiful but it is really challenging as well, it takes everything from you. I discovered 3D when I moved to Madrid in 2015. That was the beginning of the rest of my life. 3D was like a new world, I could do everything I wanted to do with paint, but in a really cool way and it was so awesome. 3D took me here, where I am now and I could not be happier.
WHO OR WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MAJOR INFLUENCES?
I guess I have a lot of influences. I admire a lot of 3D artists and studios. If I talk about when I started my big influences were Franz Kline, Egon Schiele, Gordon Matta-Clark, Kanevsky, Francis Bacon, Andrew Wyeth, Jaume Plensa, Lucian Freud, Otto Dix, Michael Borremans, and so many others. I guess I don’t have any specific artist or kind of art as a reference, I take it from everywhere and I love art, so I love to look at it, to study it, to interpret it. I guess my major influence is art itself.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORKING PROCESS?
My working process does not obey any rules or routines. I use to spend my day doing things (a baby takes a lot of time) and I use to think of ideas while I am doing those things. When I have a cool concept I try to represent it in 3D and I start to work on it, I try to not do exactly the picture I imagined in my head, I try to go further, and keep the image simple.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO CREATE?
Something inside. I don’t know how to put it in words, but there is something inside you that keeps you wanting more. Sometimes you stop for some days and you think “well, maybe I don’t have anything else to say, maybe that’s it, maybe that was my last piece” but then the next day you sit in front of the pc with a new file and you have that feeling again, that motivation coming from nowhere. I guess it’s all about the imagination. If you spend your day imagining worlds and pictures, you have to create those pictures.
WHAT IS YOUR STUDIO LIKE?
I work at home. We moved during the pandemia to a big apartment and I have my table next to my wife. We have some plants, a lot of books, some covers I did for magazines, a 3D print, Leo’s toys, and a lot of light. I work with a huge curved screen and a really noisy pc.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
These days I am working on a collaboration with the one and only Bran Cuzi. We are working on a personal project. I admire Bran, his work is amazing and working with him is such a great honor. After that, I am going to take some time to rest until the end of summer.
