Douze Degrés magnifies candlelight through optical research

Douze Degrés develops Flare as a lens based study of amplified candlelight

Flare is a lighting collection developed by Douze Degrés as part of its research on optics. Inspired by maritime lighthouses, it transforms a simple flame into a luminous signal. Using an optical lens, the candlelight is captured, amplified, and projected—turning a soft glow into a vibrant beam.

Douze Degrés presents the project as an articulation of precise optical behavior and a quiet sensory encounter, where the minimal presence of a candle gains unexpected spatial reach.

The studio positions Flare as an experiment in how a micro–light source can generate a macro effect, using carefully engineered lenses that channel the flame’s motion into a controlled ray.

This optical mechanism translates the rhythm of the flame into a fluid, atmospheric presence, creating a point of intensity within its environment without resorting to complex technology.

The result introduces a meditative dynamic that shifts with the natural movement of air, reinforcing the project’s foundation in analogue light phenomena.

Douze Degrés situates the collection within its broader practice, which focuses on interpreting contemporary themes through scenography, objects and spatial interventions.

Its work orbits around crafting narrative experiences that remain grounded in material intelligence and visual clarity.

Flare continues this direction by acting as both a functional object and a narrative device, transmitting the poetic tension between minimal energy and amplified perception.

The studio collaborates with clients whose social or creative intent benefits from storytelling that is both coherent and sensorially articulate.

Through these partnerships, each project becomes an investigation into techniques, processes and cultural references that shape the final outcome.

The development of Flare itself reflects this method, drawing knowledge from optical craft, fabrication precision and the atmospheric language of maritime signals.

Every commission for Douze Degrés is approached as a chance to expand its technical and human understanding, and Flare stands as a synthesis of this ongoing process.

The piece channels the depth of the research while maintaining an unobtrusive presence, allowing its luminous gesture to remain the central point of perception.

Through this focused simplicity, the collection reinforces the studio’s commitment to creating stories that are materialised with clarity, purpose and a distinct sensory character.
