Vincent Callebaut Architectures presents “Dunes”, a visionary project seamlessly integrating architecture with the natural landscape of Ostend, Belgium. Spearheaded by Principal Architect Vincent Callebaut and his talented design team including Kao Sum, Aurore Delcourt, and Nathalie Martinez, this project epitomizes a harmonious coexistence between human habitation and ecological preservation.
Nestled within the picturesque Belgian coast, characterized by its sweeping tides and windswept dunes adorned with native flora, Dunes proposes the creation of a cluster of elegantly curved villas discreetly nestled amidst the sand dunes, camouflaged beneath tall grass and thriving wildlife. Embracing the ethos of Land Art, Dunes draws inspiration from the Earthworks movement of contemporary American artists like Robert Smithson and James Turrell. The project, aptly dubbed “Sandworks”, pays homage to its surroundings while offering a modern living experience intertwined with the natural world.
At the core of Dunes lies innovation in materials and sustainability. The villas are crafted from self-healing bio-concrete, locally sourced from marine ecosystem byproducts such as mollusk shells. This revolutionary bio-concrete, infused with spores of bacteria and fungi, possesses inherent healing properties through bio-mineralization, ensuring longevity and structural integrity.
The design ethos extends seamlessly, with interior spaces echoing the organic contours of the dunes and furniture inspired by the shapes and textures of beach pebbles and shells. Each piece of furniture is meticulously crafted from natural stones, mother-of-pearl, and recycled algae fibers, fostering a connection with the surrounding seascape. Designed to be minimalist and unobtrusive, the dune-shaped villas blend effortlessly into their surroundings, becoming virtually invisible against the backdrop of the sea and sky.
