ERM Studio’s Materia Digital Collection
The “Materia Digital” collection by ERM Studio is a captivating fusion of digital technology and material artistic expression. This innovative endeavor delves into the vast possibilities of geometric creation within the realm of digital code, utilizing the foundational functions of parametric design programs. The studio’s aspiration is not only to expand but also to complexify these functions, breathing life into intricate geometries that emanate an aesthetic reminiscent of organic engineering.
Drawing inspiration from aesthetic pioneers like H.R. Giger, whose exploration of the biomechanoid aesthetic serves as a catalyst, the collection embraces a distinctive bone-organic aesthetic. Originating from a digital code, this aesthetic is enriched by the graceful curves and surfaces inspired by nature, echoing elements found in orchids and the sculpted forms of evolution, such as clavicles, hips, vertebrae, and horns.
The translation of these organic references into geometric patterns establishes a radial repetition model for a particular element. Each piece initiates with the creation of a base pattern, onto which intentional deformations are inscribed from the outset. These deformations not only seek aesthetic complexity but also serve functional purposes. For instance, in the case of the table, the curves forming the base construction pattern are strategically designed to confer rigidity through material torsion and support the glass tabletop.
This intricate process presented a formidable challenge: the transition from digital materiality, characterized by purity and precision, to tangible materiality embodied in form. In response to this challenge, the design process and materials become fertile ground for the exploration of this convergence.
While the digital realm exudes perfection and precision, the material world introduces the inherent imperfections of craftsmanship, infusing each piece with a unique language. The use of metal casting and aluminum becomes the conduit for establishing this connection. The deliberate choice of aluminum aims to elevate the piece both in terms of its components and the manufacturing process.
The interpolation of the base construction pattern towards the final volumetric form serves a dual purpose. It not only imparts a specific final aesthetic to the piece but also embodies values of production efficiency. Achieved through radial symmetry and pattern repetition, this meticulous approach minimizes environmental impact. Constraints are imposed to reinforce the project’s commitment to sustainability and reutilization, particularly in waste reduction during the casting process.
By focusing mold production on one section of the entire geometry, the studio endeavors to create intricately aesthetic pieces with minimal environmental repercussions. Moreover, leaving the aluminum in its raw state avoids finishing on the final piece, resulting in a completely recyclable work of art.
