Fifth Floor Cologne: The Gamble.

Fifth Floor Cologne: The Gamble.

Fifth Floor Cologne’s “The Gamble” reduces a relationship to its most recurring image: one person entering as the other leaves. The door is the whole argument. Backpacker indie pop with sun-soaked percussion underneath, the groove working against the content in the way the song needs it to. “You make it just as easy as pain” lands because ease and damage share the same gesture here, the same person, the same threshold crossed in opposite directions. Harmonized vocals carry the longing across more than one voice, the feeling too wide for a single register.

By the final repetition the image has become something closer to a fact than a complaint, the entrance and exit so consistent they’ve stopped being dramatic and started being structural. Fifth Floor Cologne leaves it there, the groove still moving, the door still swinging, the odds unchanged.
