‘Move a Little Bit Further’ bench by GARZA Studio reflecting the ever-changing nature of human connections
GARZA Studio’s design ethos represents a profound exploration of the human experience through the medium of furniture. One of its standout pieces, a bench designed to symbolize the fluid dynamics of human relationships, is an evocative example of this approach. With seats that glide over steel bearing balls, the bench offers a tangible representation of the shifting proximities we encounter in relationships.
This design captures the nuanced interplay of closeness and distance, transforming a deeply emotional concept into a functional, interactive object. The inspiration for this creation arose from a personal moment of transition—a breakup. It was during this time that the designer delved into the idea of constant movement, reflecting the ever-changing nature of human connections.
Seeking to bridge the expressive potential of art with the functional realm of furniture design, the bench became a medium for articulating these sentiments. This piece also pays homage to Nina Farkache’s “Come a Little Bit Closer,” produced by Droog Design, underscoring the designer’s engagement with the work of influential predecessors. Crafted from solid aluminum, steel bearing balls, and stainless steel fasteners, the bench is a testament to meticulous material selection and construction.
Leonardo Garza, the creative force behind GARZA Studio, brings a wealth of experience to his work. As a Mexican architect and designer based in Mexico City, his formative years included working on the first Tadao Ando project in Latin America. This experience cultivated a minimalist aesthetic deeply rooted in sensitivity to form and material.
Garza’s career took a pivotal turn during his time in New York City, where he honed his skills at a high-end fashion retail interior design firm. Immersed in a world of luxury and precision, he developed a sophisticated understanding of detail and materials. This period marked the inception of his independent design practice, GARZA Studio, where his vision took flight.
Recognized as a rising talent, Garza was recently featured in New York Magazine’s “AN Interior” section, which spotlights promising designers with architectural backgrounds. His work has also been showcased in prominent venues and events in both New York and Mexico City, including Sight Unseen, Pink Essay, Ballista Space, and Collectible Fair. These platforms highlight his ability to merge artistic expression with industrial design principles.
At its core, GARZA Studio champions simplicity and elegance, prioritizing visual clarity and streamlined manufacturing processes. Subtlety, timelessness, and a keen attention to detail define the studio’s aesthetic. Yet, it is the unexpected elements—those moments of surprise woven into the design—that truly set GARZA apart. By straddling the realms of art and industrial design, GARZA Studio continues to redefine the contemporary object, inviting a deeper engagement with the physical and emotional dimensions of design.
