During a leisurely stroll through a flea market on a picturesque Sunday afternoon, Alain Gilles attention was captivated by the unexpected allure of small gem samples. This fortuitous encounter ignited the creative spark behind the Gem rug collection for Illulian.
Drawing inspiration from this accidental find, a unique composition emerged – a visual dialogue between two contrasting elements. Much like a collage, the design showcases the interplay of shapes, with one element’s roundness juxtaposed against the sheer hardness and angularity of the other. The rugs embody a layered aesthetic, giving the impression that one element is delicately stacked atop the other, creating a captivating visual depth.
Playing with perceptions and the concept of materiality, the collection echoes the Renaissance craft of imitating materials. In this case, the beauty, transparency, and lightness of quartz crystals are translated into fresh and soothing rugs. The veins and color variations of the stone take center stage, adding a unique depth to each piece, embracing a postmodern sensibility.
Comprising three distinct rug designs, the collection aims to guide the aesthetic direction of a room and engage in a conversation with its environment.
