Goons introduces Evolving Forms, a transformative dining collection at St Vincents
Evolving Forms, the latest collection by Paris-based design studio goons, marks its debut at St Vincents in Antwerp, bringing an innovative perspective to contemporary furniture design. Opening on January 23, 2025, this exhibition presents an eight-piece dining collection that reflects the studio’s signature fusion of utility, craftsmanship, and material exploration. Founded by creative duo Mia Kim and Paul Trussler, goons draws inspiration from their backgrounds in high fashion and architecture, resulting in a body of work that is both pragmatic and artistically refined.
The collection is an evolution of the studio’s past work, particularly its spontaneous and functional approach to design. Rooted in the couple’s everyday life, goons’ creations prioritize adaptability and simplicity while maintaining an unmistakable aesthetic presence. The pieces, crafted from Scandinavian birch plywood, offer a modular and multifunctional solution for dynamic living spaces.
The set consists of three tables—a console and two dining tables—designed for nine possible configurations, accommodating various activities from entertaining to work and play. Additional pieces, including a stool, bench, and chairs with cushions in pure Italian wool, further enhance the collection’s versatility.
The philosophy behind goons is deeply tied to the principles of material honesty and structural ingenuity. Much like the minimalist and utilitarian approach seen in Donald Judd’s work, their designs strip materials down to their essence while embracing their natural character. The architectural influences are evident in the collection’s nomenclature.
The Brace seating series takes its name from structural bracing systems, while the Five Points tables reference Le Corbusier’s five principles of modern architecture. This interplay between architectural rigor and organic spontaneity defines the essence of Evolving Forms. Beyond aesthetics and function, the collection embodies a celebration of the unpredictable nature of life.
Designed with transformation in mind, these pieces adapt effortlessly to changing needs, reflecting the fluidity of modern living. This philosophy extends into the exhibition’s interactive elements, where real-life activations, such as gatherings and meals, invite audiences to engage with the furniture in a lived-in setting. The scenography of the gallery space will evolve throughout the exhibition, reinforcing the dynamic spirit of the collection.
St Vincents, known for its carefully curated selection of contemporary and collectible design, provides a fitting backdrop for goons’ debut. Since its founding in 2016 by Henri Delbarre and Geraldine Jackman, the Antwerp-based gallery has been a champion of both established and emerging talents, emphasizing provenance, craftsmanship, and the narrative behind each creation. The collaboration with goons reflects a shared appreciation for objects that transcend their materiality, offering a deeper connection to the rhythms of everyday life.
The collection is a testament to the shared vision of its creators. Trussler, an architect with extensive experience in international projects, brings a meticulous approach to form and structure. Kim, whose background spans fashion, sculpture, and painting, infuses the designs with an innate sense of elegance and emotional resonance. Together, they craft pieces that are not merely functional but deeply personal, embodying the quiet sophistication that defines goons.
