Pinion project is a collaboration work between two Seoul-based design studios, HATTERN and LAB.CRETE.
It started from research about relations of two materials, Acrylic and Concrete, which are contrasting with each other. “HATTERN”, focused on transparent materials and colors, and “LAB.CRETE”, focused on opaque materials and density, set an objective in creating a new type of terrazzo.
Unlike traditional terrazzo, sanding is unnecessary. It satisfies both strength and transparency concurrently. With such premises control of color, pattern and density is possible within this graphic work. Acrylic is a material that creates a light, transmits light, maximizes spatiality, yet concrete builds up space with the properties of heavy, rigid, and opaque materials.
The two studios added color, pattern, and shape to the concrete of such form that could be penetrated by acrylic fragments while the acrylic was meant to be cut and its remaining spaces were filled with the concrete. The two materials mixed in a dependent way are complementing the structure and function with the purpose of maximizing the properties of the object. As a result, the Furniture series features contrasting materials while at the same time creating the unique aura. The project not only proposes designed furniture or products but also shows the potential of new material.
