hazy waters: are you there

hazy waters: are you there

hazy waters’ “are you there” captures the rush of wanting more even when the mind and body are starting to give out. “The world is spinning and it can’t seem to stop” sets the scene, with thoughts getting louder and patience running thin. The wall-of-sound riff and hazy 90s shoegaze textures give that spiral a musical shape, while the rapped verses bring the words closer to the surface.

The speaker knows the risks and keeps going anyway. “I crave this feeling that you just can’t replace” sits beside “Not good enough, never been good enough,” revealing a need that pleasure alone cannot satisfy. The repeated questions about whether something is finally coming suggest a search for a release, though the speaker cannot even name what they expect to find. Each attempt to get closer leaves them more restless and less sure of where they stand.

The refrain returns to the same point: “You’ve lost me in my tracks.” There is a desire to turn things around, but the excuses are running out, and the stop signs have already been missed. By the end, “I crave all your nothings” leaves the speaker reaching for something that offers little in return. “are you there” stays inside that uneasy space where knowing you’ve gone too far does not mean you can stop.
