Henry Morris: One Night Stand

Henry Morris: One Night Stand

Henry Morris’s “One Night Stand” stays with the part of desire that begins after the other person leaves. The song takes its central image from two stars meeting for a single night, turning a casual encounter into a question about whether something more could have remained behind.

The narrator knows the pattern and keeps repeating it anyway: a bar, too much to drink, sex, then the quiet after. That last part matters more than the encounter itself. The admission that he has done “incredibly stupid shit” and never learned the lesson leaves the song without a clean answer, caught between wanting the night and wanting it to mean something.

Morris extends the darker self-examination associated with his writing since Jawbreaker into a more specific kind of loneliness. Two people cross paths, disappear, and become something the other person keeps thinking about. The stars meet for one night, then keep moving.
