Drone Modular Sofa Chair: The art of modular comfort by Jakub Kubica
The Drone Modular Sofa Chair by Jakub Kubica is a striking fusion of minimalist aesthetics and artisanal craftsmanship, designed in 2024 and produced in a limited numbered collection at his atelier near Berlin. This meticulously crafted piece is built to offer a seamless balance between comfort and refined design, with its modular nature allowing for flexible configurations, including the possibility of forming a double-seater sofa. The structural framework is composed of waxed metal, hand-polished with natural bee wax to enhance durability and ease of maintenance, preventing fingerprints and smudges from marring its sleek appearance.
Every sofa chair incorporates two carefully selected leather hides, each undergoing a precise vegetable-tanning process in Tuscany, Italy. The premium calf leather is dyed through, treated with a wax finish, and tumbled to achieve a remarkable softness. Over time, the material develops an organic patina, reinforcing its timeless aesthetic while ensuring a unique, natural texture that evolves with use. The Drone Modular Sofa Chair is not only a functional piece of furniture but also an artistic statement, reflecting Kubica’s commitment to material integrity and sophisticated craftsmanship.
Jakub Kubica, a Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist originally from Slovakia, is known for his innovative approach to blending natural elements with industrial materials. His work seamlessly intersects art and design, often incorporating stone with stark metallic structures. A central theme in his creative practice is the concept of rediscovery, akin to the meticulous fieldwork of an archaeologist, as he seeks new perspectives on the present.
This exploration extends to environmental fragility and the potential consequences of its neglect, themes he delves into through his series “Please do not hesitate to contact me.” This project, which was featured during Berlin Art Week at Wilhelm Halle, earned him recognition as a finalist for the 2021 Berlin Masters. His work continues to challenge conventions, offering thought-provoking pieces that merge functionality with artistic expression.
