Julia Morgan’s “Performing” looks at the habit of shaping yourself around what other people want to see. A young ballerina runs through the lyrics, from childhood ambitions to insecurities. Morgan connects that experience to her time as a young actress, when playing different characters sometimes made it harder to recognize who she was outside those roles. The upbeat dance arrangement gives the subject an interesting contrast.
The line “I’m performing when I’m dormant cuz I want them to like me” gets at the exhaustion of always trying to be appealing. Morgan describes a version of herself who keeps dancing for an audience, hoping for approval, while feeling that nobody sees the person behind the performance.
The front-row seat is another image of that distance: someone can watch every move and still remain too far away to know her. She wrote the track as a sad piano ballad before reworking it with co-writer and producer Stella Smyth into a dance track. That change fits the song’s subject in an unexpected way. The music gives people a reason to dance, while the lyrics question the need to keep putting on a show. Even at the end, the audience is still there, sitting close enough to watch but not close enough to see her.
