Lightfall a multisensory experience by Studio Lemercier at at Superblue Miami

Superblue Miami, renowned for its cutting-edge experiential art, announces the debut of Lightfall, a new immersive installation by Studio Lemercier in collaboration with ambient electronic musician Murcof. Scheduled to open on October 28, 2024, Lightfall offers visitors a unique multisensory experience, blending light, air, and water in a captivating exploration of nature’s elements.

The installation immerses guests in a dreamlike environment where Murcof’s ethereal soundscapes and Studio Lemercier’s innovative use of mist and light create an ever-evolving spectacle of abstract forms suspended in atomized water droplets.

As visitors move through the space, they encounter a curtain of transparent mist enveloping them, and are drawn into a dynamic interaction of natural forces. The gradual reveal of abstract light volumes within the mist creates a sensation of stillness and motion, allowing the audience to feel the effects of gravity and air currents in real time.

This fluid experience is deeply connected to nature, yet it extends beyond traditional depictions, focusing instead on the use of nature’s elements as a transformative medium. Lightfall invites viewers to lose themselves in the layered movements, textures, and sounds, reflecting Studio Lemercier’s dedication to blending technology with the organic world.

Studio Lemercier, co-directed by Joanie Lemercier and Juliette Bibasse, is known for pushing the boundaries of light and space in their installations. They have previously created works that challenge conventional constraints of the video screen, incorporating stage designs, projections, and public art installations that redefine human perception of nature.

Their work has been internationally celebrated, with projects displayed in various locations, including Australia, the UK, Spain, and Germany. In their collaborations, they have consistently emphasized the importance of making high-quality art installations accessible to a broader audience, aligning perfectly with Superblue’s vision.

The Lightfall installation marks an evolution in Studio Lemercier’s artistic journey, building on their earlier works like Constellations and Lightscapes, which have toured globally and earned widespread recognition. This new piece, designed specifically for Superblue, highlights the studio’s focus on harnessing solar energy, low-tech approaches, and nature-inspired art. By seamlessly blending technology and environmental elements, Lightfall challenges visitors to rethink their connection with nature and perception.

The installation continues Superblue Miami’s tradition of presenting innovative, multisensory art, joining the works of artists like teamLab, James Turrell, Es Devlin, and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer in the gallery’s ongoing exhibition, Every Wall is a Door. Visitors to Superblue can experience these immersive artworks year-round, gaining deeper insights into how contemporary art interacts with human perception and the natural world.
