The Enchanted Art of Ling is eel: Fairies, Tattoos, and Spiritual Dreamscapes

Xiaoling Li, professionally known as Ling is eel, creates art rooted in a deeply personal and spiritual vision, a world inhabited by fairies, inspired by recurring dreams that have accompanied her since childhood.

This imaginative realm serves not just as a muse but as a mission. To her, bringing this inner landscape to life is a sacred act, a way to stay connected to truth and purpose.

With each tattoo and brushstroke, she channels a world shaped by emotion, memory, and subconscious exploration, offering a gateway into the unseen spaces of the human psyche.

Born in Beijing to Korean parents and now based in Queens, New York, Ling is eel works primarily through two tactile and intimate mediums: tattooing and traditional painting on thick, cold-pressed paper.

These practices allow her to maintain a physical connection to her art and audience. Tattooing, in particular, becomes an act of collaboration and ritual.

Each piece is designed with care, allowing the dreamworld she sees so clearly to be carried on the skin of another, intimate, permanent, alive.

Her creative process is a response to the values instilled by a materialist education system, one that emphasized achievement and possessions over emotional and spiritual awareness.

She finds alignment with idealist philosophers like Wang Yangming, who emphasized unity of knowledge and action, and with Carl Jung, whose work on dreams and the unconscious deeply informs her worldview.

For Ling is eel, art is not just visual; it is philosophical, moral, and deeply personal. In both her tattoo practice and her painting, she invites a return to inner awareness. Her fairies and dreamscapes are more than decorative, they serve as quiet reminders of imagination, vulnerability, and the forgotten dimensions of being.

She believes our internal worlds are as vast as the cosmos, filled with meaning if we allow ourselves to feel and remember. Her work is a tribute to the inner child, the dreamer, and the part of each person that yearns for wonder and emotional truth.

Now working from a private studio, Ling continues to develop her visual language with increasing depth. Her detailed linework, delicate textures, and emotionally charged characters reflect a lifelong commitment to honoring the invisible. Every design is an invitation to remember, beauty is not just in the world around us, but in the worlds we carry within.
