Luka Winters’s “The Rejects” stays with a narrator who wants to go out, act out and leave the consequences for later. “I feel like going out / I’m in a time of my life” sets that mood from the start, followed by plans for the night and a warning to someone who keeps waiting for him.
The song keeps returning to the same request: “stay with me now / don’t let me down.” It sits against the narrator telling the other person not to waste their time on him, creating a simple pull between pushing someone away and asking them to stay. Then comes the blunt admission: “I feel like acting out and making somebody cry / that’s just who I am.”
The repetition becomes part of that character. “Stay with me now” keeps coming back while the narrator offers no promise that things will change. “The Rejects” leaves him there, caught between wanting someone close and warning them about what comes with it.
