Collection ‘Marks of Existence’ Highlights The Allure Of Natural Materials

“Marks of Existence” A Collection Of Unique Objects

“Marks of Existence”, the latest collection from Movimento Gallery, delves into the beauty of natural materials and the imperfections that define them. This collection is deeply inspired by the three marks of existence from Buddhism: impermanence, imperfection, and incompleteness. These principles celebrate the imperfect and the unpredictable, qualities often overshadowed in a modern world obsessed with precision and flawlessness.

The contemporary notions of beauty, guided by societal expectations and technological advancements, focus on perfection—symmetry in faces, the flawlessness of diamonds, and the clean lines of modern architecture. Yet, we continue to appreciate the natural beauty in things like the patina of leather, the complex veins in marble, and the irregular rings of tree trunks. These imperfections resonate with us because they reflect our own human nature: we are imperfect and incomplete, constantly evolving.

Marks of Existence embraces these imperfections by highlighting the natural complexity and beauty of materials that cannot be replicated. At the heart of the collection is Travertino Ascolano, a traditional stone known for its unique textures and colors. The stone’s natural irregularities are what make it special, each piece revealing something new and unexpected. Complementing the stone is a wooden Ikat weave, an ancient technique reimagined for the modern era. The weave’s varying shapes and sizes mirror the unpredictability of the natural materials used in the collection.

Nine artists from around the world have contributed to Marks of Existence, each bringing their unique style and cultural influences to the collection. This diversity results in a series of works that tell personal, yet universal stories through design. Each piece in the collection is a reflection of the artist’s heritage, experiences, and creativity, making every object a one-of-a-kind creation.

The collection marks a new chapter for Movimento Gallery, as it is the gallery’s first self-initiated project. These unique designs, crafted from the same materials, are exclusive to Movimento Gallery, further emphasizing the uniqueness of each piece. The collection will be presented at PAD London in October, where the initial works will be showcased in an exhibition designed by Artefatto Design Studio. The exhibition space, featuring Rubelli’s Paja collection of wallcoverings and artworks from BKV Fine Art, will create an immersive environment where light, art, and design converge.

From October 8-13 in Berkeley Square, London, Marks of Existence invites art and design enthusiasts to experience the beauty of imperfection and the allure of natural materials in a way that challenges conventional ideas of beauty and design. This collection stands as a testament to the philosophy that beauty lies not in perfection, but in the stories told by the marks of existence themselves.
