National Geographic Museum of Exploration

On October 21, 2024, the National Geographic Society officially announced the forthcoming launch of its highly anticipated Museum of Exploration, set to open in mid-2026. This cutting-edge, sustainably-built attraction will become a centerpiece of the Society’s newly reimagined campus in Washington, D.C. Spanning over 100,000 square feet, the museum will offer visitors an immersive, technology-driven experience, including unique exhibitions, educational adventures, a state-of-the-art theater, a restaurant, and a retail store.

Designed to spark curiosity and foster a deep connection to the wonders of the world, the Museum of Exploration will highlight the Society’s mission of exploration, science, and storytelling. As visitors enter through an iconic 11-foot yellow border, they will encounter a variety of features such as the Rolex Explorers Landing, showcasing equipment and artifacts from groundbreaking expeditions, and an immersive experience allowing guests to take on the role of an Explorer in remote locations worldwide.

A 400-seat theater will provide a venue for captivating National Geographic films, while an outdoor nighttime courtyard experience will bring the natural world to life through projection mapping and interactive media. This new museum also places a strong emphasis on inclusivity, with features designed for accessibility, including Braille text, tactile maps, all-gender restrooms, and ASL media interpretations.

The Museum of Exploration is expected to make a lasting impact, continuing the National Geographic Society’s 136-year legacy of innovation and exploration, while also fostering a spirit of adventure for all who visit.
