NikeAir_Lab: An innovative space for creatives in Milan

Nike and Dropcity present NikeAir_Lab research installation in Milan

NikeAir_Lab is presented by Nike in collaboration with Dropcity, an emerging architecture and design center located behind Milano Centrale, during Milan Design Week 2026. The project takes the form of a temporary research laboratory, offering the public an inside look at the future of air-driven design. Open from April 20 to 26 during Milan Design Week 2026, the project provides early access to Air Lab, a permanent facility scheduled to open later this year as part of Dropcity’s long-term program.

The installation operates as an immersive, process-oriented environment structured around eight tool stations, each dedicated to a specific property of air as a design medium. Visitors engage directly with robotic arms, thermoforming machines, pneumatic cylinder systems and custom-built devices that translate air into measurable actions. These include visualizing air as evidence, forming it into structural volumes, deforming it through pressure, and using suction, cooling and blasting to manipulate material behavior. The system transforms air from an invisible condition into an active component within product development and spatial experimentation.

At the core of NikeAir_Lab Milan Design Week 2026 is a working methodology grounded in prototyping and iteration. Nearly 100 experimental artifacts, including samples and swatches, document the evolution of Nike Air technologies such as Air Liquid Max, FlyWeb, Radical AirFlow and Therma-FIT Air Milano. Displayed alongside tools and machinery, these elements reveal how air operates across scales, from cushioning systems in footwear to adaptive textile structures. The lab positions prototyping as an ongoing process where testing, failure and refinement are integral to design outcomes.

The spatial sequence extends into a network of tunnels that guide visitors through historical and contemporary narratives. The Air Archives present early experiments by aerospace engineer Frank Rudy alongside research materials from Nike’s Department of Archives, while the Air Library incorporates insights from athletes and collaborators including Arianna Fontana, Hiroshi Fujiwara and Faith Kipyegon. These contributions situate NikeAir_Lab within a broader cultural and technological context, linking performance innovation with material research and public engagement.

Following Milan Design Week, the installation will transition into a permanent civic infrastructure. Air Lab will be integrated into Dropcity’s 10,000-square-meter campus, which includes facilities for robotics, model making, 3D printing, textiles, ceramics and woodworking. Established through a 20-year agreement with the municipality of Milan, Dropcity positions itself as one of Europe’s largest centers for architecture and design, offering subsidized workspaces and production resources for emerging creatives.

NikeAir_Lab Milan Design Week 2026 demonstrates a collaborative model between industry and research institutions, where temporary architecture evolves into lasting public infrastructure. By situating experimental design tools within an accessible environment, the project addresses the relationship between innovation, education and urban context, establishing a framework where design production remains visible, participatory and continuously evolving.
