Ori Dagan takes on Peggy Lee´s “Why Don’t You Do Right” with his deep bass-baritone and a relaxed swing. His lower register gives the melody a different weight, while the playful phrasing keeps the performance from becoming too formal. He knows the song’s attitude and gives it room to come through.
The piano leaves space to wander around the melody. He stretches phrases, plays with the rhythm and brings his improvisational instincts into a song that has passed through many voices over the decades. The performance has the ease of a live set, with the musicians giving each other room rather than pushing for a bigger sound.
The recording opens Live in the Market, an album released in October 2026. Dagan has built a catalogue around original songs with wit and a taste for wordplay, from “Googleable” to “Clap on the 2 and the 4.” Here, he works with material that already has a long history and makes the standard part of his own set.
