The artistic collaboration of Paul Coenen and BWB Surface Technology

Paul Coenen, in collaboration with BWB Surface Technology, has unveiled an innovative exploration of aluminum’s transformative possibilities through a distinctive hand-anodized process. This partnership has given rise to the Section Column Light, Section Coffee Table, and Camber Stool, a trio of creations that redefine the aesthetic and functional capabilities of anodized aluminum. The designs showcase a unique shrink-wrap dye technique, marking a significant departure from traditional approaches to this industrial material.

The project originated from meticulous hands-on experimentation with hand-anodizing. A pivotal element of this process involves wrapping aluminum during the dyeing stage, creating natural creases that guide the flow of color. The result is a rippling, multi-hued texture that captures the interplay between structure and artistry. This innovative application transforms the typically uniform surface of anodized aluminum into a dynamic canvas, revealing intricate patterns and vivid contrasts.

Each piece in the collection undergoes a two-stage coloring process. The Section Coffee Table begins with a bold yellow base that is overlaid with a deep purple-blue finish, while the Section Column Light features a vibrant violet layer. Both designs deliberately leave areas of raw aluminum exposed, emphasizing the contrast between the material’s natural state and its transformed appearance. The careful assembly of individually anodized components further accentuates the intricate, textured patterns, encouraging a deeper exploration of the material’s visual and tactile qualities.

In addition to the Section Column Light and Section Coffee Table, the collection includes the Camber Stool, which offers a distinct perspective on the anodizing technique. This piece features a single-layer purple-blue finish, allowing significant portions of the raw aluminum to remain visible. This approach highlights the inherent beauty of the base material while demonstrating the versatility of the anodizing process.

First presented at Dutch Design Week 2024, the collaboration between Paul Coenen and BWB Surface Technology exemplifies the fusion of experimental artistry and industrial precision. By pushing the boundaries of what anodized aluminum can achieve, this project elevates the material to new expressive heights, celebrating its potential as both a functional and aesthetic medium.
