Plain Mister Smith, Findlay Brown, Krystle Dos Santos: Dream Gigantic

Plain Mister Smith sets tranquil vocals against a cluttered instrumental arrangement on “Dream Gigantic,” the final single before a new album. It was written during walks along desolate Paris sidewalks after the Olympics, using the voices of Findlay Brown and Krystle Dos Santos to outline a narrative of unfulfilled ambitions. The lyrics jump between fear and desire, mapping a speaker who gets lost in fantasy rather than returning to a normal routine.

The project builds on a persona conceived by Mark Jowett, who handles the guitars, synths, cellos, and miscellaneous sound effects. John Raham’s drums and Darren Parris’s bass steady the whimsical arrangement, while Sophie Heppel’s violin winds through the vocal lines. Chris Perry’s mix prevents the odd textures from blurring together, keeping the individual instrumental contributions distinct.

The track avoids a straightforward progression, matching the theme of a life diverted by folly. The vocal melodies do not tie up into a neat final chorus. Instead, the final synth notes and cello lines drift apart, stopping just as the rhythm section drops out.
