Roaring Tiger Studios’ “Whatever’s Clever Part 1” keeps its groove understated, letting the contrast between lo-fi electronics, raw blues guitar, and saxophone carry the piece. Built from 80s MPC beats, the track moves through a late-night space without rushing toward a big payoff. The guitar gives the electronic rhythm a rougher surface, keeping the groove connected to something played rather than programmed into perfection.
The arrangement saves its sharpest change for the end. The saxophone enters with a fiery burst before the track fades, shifting the mood without breaking the pulse that came before it. That ending gives the piece a sense of release after the restraint of the earlier sections. Rather than stacking more elements onto the groove, it waits until the final stretch to let the instrument take over.
As Part 1 of Volume 1, “Whatever’s Clever Part 1” works as a compact introduction to Roaring Tiger Studios’ one-person approach. Roby Edwards handles the project himself, and the music leaves room for the different parts to sound like they belong to the same physical space. The fade-out does not close the door so much as let the groove disappear down the street.
