Ross + Kramer presents En Iwamura’s “Mask” in New York

Ross + Kramer proudly presents “Mask,” the sixth solo exhibition by En Iwamura, opened on January 30, 2025, at its New York location. It features over 20 ceramic sculptures, including some of the artist’s first wall-hanging pieces, marking a significant evolution in his practice. The collection explores the cultural and symbolic significance of masks, drawing inspiration from Iwamura’s childhood fascination with the global mask display at Osaka’s National Museum of Ethnology.

This exhibition reflects the profound sense of mystery and curiosity he experienced when encountering masks from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, while also considering their relevance in today’s post-pandemic world. Through this body of work, Iwamura reconnects with a childlike sense of wonder, curiosity, and creativity. The Mask series examines the historical function of masks as tools for artistic, religious, and ritualistic expression, reinterpreting their presence in contemporary society.

In addition to this series, the exhibition presents works from his “Neo Jomon: Stacking Neighbor” collection, which stems from his observations of his son’s exploration of the world through play. Similar to stacked toys, these sculptures feature modular components that fit together in various ways to form a complete piece. The interplay of vibrant glazes, soft forms, and coarse textures exemplifies the artist’s signature aesthetic.

His meticulous surface treatments, achieved by allowing hand-built forms to partially air dry before scoring them with tools, create intricate rake-like patterns reminiscent of Buddhist Zen gardens and the cord-marked pottery of Japan’s Jōmon period. Beyond its artistic depth, this exhibition also serves as a meditation on parenthood, encouraging viewers to reconnect with their inner child. Iwamura’s ability to bridge traditional craftsmanship with contemporary themes reinforces his place as a leading figure in ceramic art.
